The Chartered Institute of Horticulture (CIH) is delighted to announce the winners of its Reel Competition, which invited entrants to showcase the many and varied career opportunities available within horticulture, the original green career.

The standard of entries was exceptionally high, making judging a challenging task. The competition attracted a diverse range of submissions that highlighted the skills, knowledge and passion found across the profession.

First place was awarded to Stella Jardine Gardener with Historic Environment Scotland. Her winning reel highlighted the restoration and management of planting on Inchcolm Island, showcasing the vital role horticulture plays in conserving historic landscapes, supporting biodiversity and preserving our heritage.

Joint runners-up were Rachael Langridge, an Apprentice Gardener with the National Trust, and Ellis Lewis who is now a Level 3 Supervisor Horticulture Apprentice at RHS Garden Rosemoor.

Rachael’s reel highlighted her transition into horticulture following a career change from veterinary nursing, showcasing the skills she has gained, the enjoyment of working outdoors, and her passion for helping plants and wildlife thrive.

Lewis’s reel promoted horticulture as a diverse and rewarding career, highlighting the variety of work involved, the benefits of working outdoors, and the opportunities the profession offers to make a positive impact on people and the environment.

Jason Daff, Honorary Secretary for The Chartered Institute of Horticulture, said:

“The standard of the reels was incredible and made judging extremely difficult. We were delighted by the enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism shown by all those who entered.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to film and share their work. The entries showcased the breadth of opportunities within horticulture and highlighted the passion and dedication of people working across our profession. Collectively, they demonstrated why horticulture remains the original green career and an exciting profession for future generations.”

The Institute warmly congratulates Stella, Rachael and Lewis on their success and thanks all entrants for their outstanding contributions.
