Local Skills Plans are being updated across England, it is important that industry professionals and employers highlight horticulture as a priority sector. Skills England have recently asked all counties in England to develop the 2026-2029 Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP’s).LSIP’s were established under the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022. At a national level, we know that our industry is extremely important; our combined contribution with the landscaping sector is over £38 billion to GDP (The Environmental Horticulture Group – EHG Mission Green Growth report 2024), and edible crop production is worth approximately £5 billion. However, as skills plans are developed at a local level, there is a risk that our industry will not receive the attention it deserves.
