About the role

The Chartered Institute of Horticulture (CIH) seeks to appoint an Early-Career Horticulturist Representative to our Council of Trustees to represent the key demographics of horticultural students and those beginning their careers in horticulture; early-career horticulturists (ECHs).

You will use your experience, knowledge and skills to ensure that early-career horticulturists are a focus of the Institute’s ambitions and that our activities and events are inclusive and contribute to supporting the aspirations of this key demographic.

You will be a student of horticulture or will have recently began your own career in horticulture (i.e. fewer than 3 years professional experience). You may be an apprentice, undergraduate, graduate, mature student, career-changer, trainee or in employment.

You do not have to be a member of the CIH already, more importantly, you’ll be a passionate proponent of horticulture and careers in horticulture and will be enthusiastic in contributing to the work of the CIH in promoting our profession.

Expected time commitment

The Council of Trustees meets 4 times per year, you would be expected to attend these meetings (typically half a day) in-person or virtually, having read any relevant papers and reports in advance.

You will also need to have time to complete any actions or outcomes from meetings, contribute to ECH initiatives and attend any relevant external events. The term of office is three years, with eligibility to serve a second term.

Like all CIH Trustees, this post is unremunerated. However you will be supported to travel to and attend meetings or events, as required, through expenses.

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved with a professional body that directly contributes to furthering the profession of horticulture and improving the opportunities for early-career horticulturists.
