Discover the largest local authority nursery in the country, capable of growing three million plants a year followed by a visit to the stunning York Gate Garden.

When Leeds council sold their Redhall Nursery site in for housing development they went against current local authority convention of farming out plant production and develop new facilities – the Arium.   Planning and building the new facility gave the opportunity for a fresh start and opened new horizons.  The huge high walled glasshouse is subdivided into 4 climate-controlled zones capable of producing more than 3 million plants per annum.  And it’s live: spring bedding will be in production for this autumn visit. The site is open to public, as the development also included a large garden shop, cafe and outdoor play area. For more information visit their website (opens an external link).

Coffee beforehand and lunch afterwards is available in the cafe at the Atrium, before driving to the afternoons visit.

York Gate is widely recognized as an outstanding example of 20th century garden design.  The one acre garden is divided into fourteen ‘garden rooms’ with different themes and in contrasting styles providing ideas for smaller spaces.  is divided into a series of smaller gardens  These include the Dell with half-hidden pathways and a stream, the famous herb garden with topiary and summerhouse, and a newer more contemporary garden with grasses and summer-flowering perennials. Created by the Spencer family between 1951 and 1994, the garden is now owned and cared for by the charity Perennial, the Gardeners Royal Benevolent Fund, and visits to the garden support this important charity.
