On May 18, 2025, we celebrate World Therapeutic Horticulture Day (WTHD), a global movement championing the power of plants in improving mental and physical well-being.
With a growing number of Chartered Institute of Horticulture members actively engaged in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH), this day provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the impact of STH on communities across the UK. Many practitioners within the Institute regularly participate in the Special Interest Group’s programme of online webinars and in-person events, making WTHD an ideal moment to highlight their work and expand awareness.
The Power of Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH)
STH continues to prove its impact. Studies show that 87% of participants in therapeutic horticulture programs report reduced stress and anxiety, while 72% experience improved social connections.
This year’s theme, “Growing Together: Cultivating Well-being Through Nature,” spotlights how horticulture fosters community resilience, mental health support, and environmental sustainability.
Ways to Mark the Occasion
🌸 Record or Photograph Your Therapeutic Gardening Story – Share how gardening has positively impacted your well-being by taking photos or writing about your experiences on social media. Whether it’s growing your first plant, maintaining a garden for mental health, or participating in a community project, celebrating your journey helps inspire others.
🌿 Plan a New Therapeutic Gardening Activity – Use WTHD as an opportunity to start a new garden project, try a different planting technique, or expand your horticultural therapy practice.
Here are some ideas to get involved:
🌾 Mindfulness with Plants – Connect with nature through a sensory garden experience, engaging in gentle walks and tactile plant exploration.
🌱 Seed Sowing for the Future – Organise a planting event to grow wildflowers, herbs, or vegetables, symbolizing hope and renewal.
🌿 Garden Therapy Workshops – Facilitate sessions demonstrating the therapeutic effects of gardening for mental health and well-being.
🎨 Nature-Based Art & Journaling – Capture the beauty of horticulture through leaf rubbings, botanical sketches, or garden journaling.
This WTHD, let’s advocate for horticulture as a vital tool for health and community well-being. How will you celebrate? And we look forward to hearing from all of our STH practitioners who are Members of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture.
