Join the Eastern heat winners of the Young Horticulturist of the Year at Writtle University College. Watch and cheer them on as they compete for a place in the Grand Final and a chance to win the £2,500 Percy Thrower Travel Bursary.

Writtle University College, this year’s venue for the regional final, leading provider of land-based, animal, environmental, design and sport education. The university college was established in 1893 and achieved University College status in 2016. More information about the Writtle University College can be found here (opens external link).

There will be tea and coffee before the competition begins at 11.15am. The contestants will be asked a wide range of horticultural questions, some through  buzzer round, and others directed to individuals. There are also two identification rounds to further test the depth and breadth of their knowledge. The regional final awards 1st place with £150, 2nd place receives £100 and 3rd place £75.  The winner progresses on to the Grand Final at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on Saturday 11 May.

After the competition, there will be a buffet lunch followed by a talk by Sandra Nicholson FCIHort on the history of the College grounds followed by tours of the Writtle Campus.
