NVQs/SVQs - NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

If you hope to go directly into employment, planning to get your qualifications through on-the-job experience of work, then National Vocational Qualifications could be the right choice for you. NVQs in horticulture and related subjects are currently available in:

  • agriculture and commercial horticulture
  • amenity horticulture
  • forestry
  • floristry
  • retail
  • conservation/environment
  • training
  • management charter initiative

National Vocational Qualifications are being introduced in all industries to make sure of a better trained, more competent and flexible workforce, and are intended eventually to replace the wide range of qualifications which have developed over the years with one single framework of progression and accreditation. NVQs differ from most other qualifications because they test what people can do - not just what they know - and possession of a VQ shows that a person has achieved a level of performance agreed nationally to be sufficient for a specified range of work activities. Levels 1 to 4 are now in place, and a further Level 5 is at the planning stage; Levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to higher education qualifications.

The National Council for Vocational Qualifications - in Scotland the Scottish Vocational & Education Council - was established by the Government as a registered company in 1986. It does not award qualifications but works with and through the established validation and awarding bodies (such as Edexcel, CG, NPTC) to develop and reform the vocational qualification system and introduce simplified arrangements.

Candidates register at approved centres, which may be colleges or places of work. The training process will identify an individual's training requirements, provide training centre tuition, workplace instruction and work experience opportunities, and assist with building a portfolio of training units. It will ensure that registration is completed with the awarding body, plan for assessment of the individual, ensure certification, and provide further career development guidance.

NVQs (but not SVQ's) are usually offered as part of a modern apprenticeship framework consisting of a NVQ plus key skills qualifications and a technical certificate. There are two types of modern apprenticeship. Foundation modern apprenticeship (FMAs). All the qualifications in the framework are at level 2 (equivalent to GCSE). Advanced modern apprenticeships (AMAP). All the qualifications in the framework are at level 3 (equivalent to GCE A2 level).
