UNIVERSITY COURSES IN
HORTICULTURE AND HIGHER EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science, BSc and BSc (Hons) (Recognised, with 2 years' post-study
experience, for Corporate Membership of the Institute of Horticulture.)
The courses are of three or
four years' duration and are designed to equip students for scientific,
technological and management posts in the industry and the ancillary
professions, such as research, advice and education.
Five GCSE Grade C or above
passed (or GCE "O" level or CSE equivalents) including English
Language and Mathematics together with two GCE "A" level passes,
preferably in Chemistry and Biology, are normally required. Good passes in
the BTEC ND or NC in horticulture or science examinations are accepted.
Some Universities and Colleges
now offer a one year course for holders of the HND or Foundation Degree to
enable them to obtain a BSc (Hons).
Each university course is
distinct but there are certain basic elements. Initially strong emphasis is
placed on the basic sciences and their application to horticulture. Later
there are detailed studies of the principal horticultural crops and an
understanding of horticultural practices. The economic significance of
horticulture, marketing and management aspects are studied.
Assessment is by written
examinations and assignments set during and at the end of the course. Honours
candidates are also usually required to submit an original dissertation on an
approved topic.
