Jimmy receives a cheque for £2,000 from the
Percy Thrower Trust, which funds his travel to a destination of
his choice, to undertake research into plants and horticulture in
his chosen region.
Jimmys interest is in the flora of Greenland. Id
like to visit an area of the world whose flora might vanish in the
not too distant future, he said. The tropics can wait,
but the Arctic may have a limited lifespan.
Once Jimmy has completed his BSc course in 2011, he has plans for
a career in green-keeping. He has already spent time working in
a garden centre and nursery, but will spend this summer working
at a golf course, to build up experience for his future.
Two competitors tied as runners-up:
Ian Roofe, who has reached the Final twice before, is manager at
Salhouse Garden Centre, near Norwich. Ian has a number of strings
to his bow, including as a Radio Norwich broadcaster. Ill
be back, Ian said. I really enjoy taking part in the competition
and am determined to win next year.
Alex Summers is studying for the NCH at Broomfield College. He already
has a BSc in Biological Sciences and starts work at Cambridge University
Botanic Gardens later this year.
Tony Girard, IoH president, congratulated all of the competitors
on their performance. This was a close-run competition
he said, and youve done yourselves proud. Its
very encouraging to see so much young talent entering our industry.
Aubrey Kirkham, chairman of the Percy Thrower Trust, agreed. Youre
the best of the best, he told the competitors. It was
young people like you that Percy Thrower wished to encourage in
your choice of horticulture as a career.
