The Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition 2006 results

Writtle student is Young Horticulturist of the Year 2006.

Ben Turner, who completes his BSc in Horticulture at Writtle College next month, won this year’s IoH Young Horticulturist of the Year competition at Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh on Saturday. Ben and runner-up Sam Held were neck and neck throughout the competition, but Ben pulled ahead in the final round. Both had taken part in the competition in previous years.

Ben plans to use the Percy Thrower travel bursary, worth £1,500, to fund a trip to Australia and study southern hemisphere ‘mediterranean’ plants.

Runner-up Sam Held was taking part in her third National Final, this time on her home turf. ‘I told everyone that this would be my last shot’, she said, ‘but I’m reconsidering!’ Sam works as a gardener at Edinburgh Zoo.

In third pace was Andrew Turvey, currently a trainee at the RHS School of Horticulture at Wisley. He has already had work experience at the Hillier Arboretum and plans to continue in amenity horticulture.

Aubrey Kirkham, chairman of the Shropshire Horticultural Trust, which administers the Percy Thrower travel bursary, praised all the contestants. ‘You are all winners’, he said. ‘I am most impressed by the knowledge you have shown today.’

IoH president David Miller agreed. ‘You have all shown a breadth of horticultural knowledge today and this will stand you in good stead in your future careers.
