Youngest ever winner of IoH Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition at Cambridge

Rocky Coles, still only 18, has won the 2002 IoH Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition at Cambridge University Botanic Garden. Placed third in the 2001 Final competition, he beat opponents from the other seven IoH branches, to take the Percy Thrower Travel Bursary, worth £1,500, to spend on a fact-finding trip to New Zealand to further his horticultural interests. The Bursary is funded by the Percy Thrower Bursary Trust.

The competition was very close, but Rocky showed a breadth of knowledge across the range of horticultural topics and did particularly well in the Plant Identification section. He is studying for the RHS Advanced Certificate at Moulton College and plans to gain work experience before applying for the Kew Diploma course.

Runner up was Jacqueline Seaby, who is studying horticulture at Lackham College, and in third place came Yvonne Etherington, a student at the RHS Garden, Wisley.

The quiz master was Stephen Anderton, The Times' gardener, writer, and TV broadcaster.
